Quick Fixes to Common Fence Problems

  • Post category:General

When you first installed a wood or vinyl fence on your property in Tampa, Fl., it looked fantastic. Every time you came home and saw your fence, you felt like you had made the right choice in putting it up.

Florida’s humid weather, the occasional storm, and general wear and tear might have done a number on your fence. A tree branch might have fallen on part of the fence or your teenager might have backed into it while practicing parallel parking.

Although in some cases, the best option is to replace a vinyl or wood fence with a new one, small problems are usually somewhat easy to fix. If your fence has any of the following issues, here’s what you can do to give it a new lease on life, fast.

Dirt and grime can make a fence that was once shiny and new look old and neglected. Usually, cleaning the fence will be enough to restore it to its former glory. How you clean the fence depends on its material.

To clean a wood fence, you can try using a mix of 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Another option is pressure washing. Sixty to ninety days after your fence is installed and accustomed to its environment, you can stain or paint your wood fence. We recommend staining.

If you have a vinyl fence, skip the bleach solution, which can be a bit too harsh for the material. Instead, use a gentle detergent and water. Instead of a brush, which can scratch vinyl, use a soft cloth to wipe away dirt and stains.

The pickets and posts on wooden fences can sometimes rot or become weak with age. When a post becomes weak, the fence might lean to one side or the other. Rotted pickets can create openings in the fence or affect its appearance.

It’s common for the gate on a fence to start sagging over time. In order to prevent your panels from sagging, we suggest using an aluminum insert in the bottom rail. If your gate is sagging, use an 8’ aluminum insert in the hinge and latch posts to give the gate system more strength.
